0:01:42
We do. I'm very excited too.
0:01:44
You know, this is our new format we're on every week and we're showcasing other small businesses. So today we have a fantastic company we're going to talk to you about and you can talk with us and we're going to talk with them and they're in the cannabis business. So we'd like to welcome to the show Mr. Kenny Cottrell and Mr. Chris Johnson from Cannellene. Hello gentlemen, how's it going? Hey now, good morning. How's it going? Good morning, it's going great. Thank you for joining us today. I'm excited. Glad to
0:02:11
be on. Yeah, yeah. So tell us a little bit about your business. So we have a cannabis company, as you said, but we do beverages instead of something you can smoke. So we do a sugar-free vegan plant-based serve you go to any beverage. So instead of having to smoke it and combust the flour, you can pour it into any beverage and consume it that way. So it's much easier on the body and it's more socially acceptable not to smoke everywhere you go and you can drink it and no one has to know what you're doing as well too.
0:02:37
That's fantastic.
0:02:38
Yeah.
0:02:38
How did you come up with that idea?
0:02:40
Oh, so I went to school for organic chemistry and I ended up getting an internship at a pharmaceutical company. And one of the first things they kind of were teaching us was herbal-based cough syrups. So learning how to infuse an herb into a syrup base which which is eventually my idea of infusing an herb into a syrup base. I guess you were infusing an herb into a syrup base. Oh wow right. But it's different, more difficult. You're talking about transferring knowledge. Okay. Yeah because THC is an oil so getting an oil and water you know when water don't mix. Right. So having to just mix around with it a little bit change the molecules up a little bit so that it can be water soluble, that's what we call it, so that it mixes with water. That's fantastic. Wow. Yeah. I love it. Honestly, it's a change. It's a quality product. It's a really quality product and the industry's changing. We're going from a lot more of your normal just rolling up weed and smoking it, now we're able to consume it in vape pens and people are drinking it, you can eat it, people have inhalers, there's topicals you can rub on your body. I mean, it's going to other avenues where it's stepping away from the black market drug type. And it's becoming, well, what I wanted to see is a medicinal product, but it's becoming recreational.
0:03:47
And it's socially acceptable. Finally. Socially acceptable.
0:03:51
We're getting there. As we open up with lounges and stuff here in Nevada as well, too, it's going to become more socially acceptable. But yeah, products like this really make it much more socially acceptable. Not having to smell weed in the air is...
0:04:03
That's the key, they don't know if you're high or not. So, it's just my opinion.
0:04:07
Which it shouldn't be any of their business anyways. Exactly. If you want to consume cannabis, it should be your business, not everybody else's. So, taking away the smell and the lingering smell of cannabis that usually brings up the...
0:04:15
And you still get the feeling.
0:04:17
Oh yeah. You still get all the feeling.
0:04:18
All the feeling. So, the difference between our product is it's going to affect you about five to 10 minutes. So, you're not going to be waiting around. Like most edibles, back in the day, you'd eat a brownie and you'd wait an hour or so and wouldn't know how high it would be. This, give it five, 10 minutes, you'll know where you're at. That's why we do small doses. There's usually, we do a half of the normal dose of the state dose. So you can kind of do half doses at a time to see where you're at. And if you want to do more, you can do more, but you kind of know where you're at without getting too high, as we call it.
0:04:43
So is a half dose a teaspoon or half a teaspoon?
0:04:46
A half dose is going to be a capful.
0:04:47
A capful, okay, so a capful is a half dose and then two capfuls is a full dose. Oh yeah, you guys have to go to their website and check it out. These little bottles are so so cute. So tell me, what made you decide to go into the cannabis business?
0:05:00
I love cannabis. It's one of those things that I was an honor roll student and all this type. I've always smoked weed. It's one of those things I knew if I was going to be in trouble for something, it was going to be for weed. If I'm going to jump into something, you got to do what you love yeah and I realize that you love this and I really love this like I really do and I'm gonna love you
0:05:21
cannabis cuz of business honestly I met Chris at a chamber of cannabis event tonight my background is accounting and like business development and we just like start talking and one of the wrong two black guys in the room so it was three of us that day actual story of us and we became friends and next thing you know, we went into business. He helped me, he had his business already set up and I said I could help with the accounting and a couple of web development. And we went from 11 stores to 37 stores in one year.
0:05:50
Wow, that's fantastic.
0:05:51
So as we evolved out of the black market, we're turning into businesses. And so I know cannabis better than anybody, and I don't mind saying that. And he knows business better than most people. So us being able to come together and turn into a cannabis business, we see the spreading of it now. And we tripled our stores that we're in. We're spreading to more states.
0:06:07
So you're able to sell your product outside of the state of Nevada.
0:06:11
So we have to get it. You have to get a license in each state. But because my product doesn't require me to have a license in each state, I work with people who already have them. They can produce my product in 400 square feet of space. It doesn't take much. And then the profits on my product are great because I make everything inside of it myself, including the flavoring. So you
0:06:28
own the rights to the recipe? Yes. And
0:06:32
you sell the recipe to folks and
0:06:36
then they make it in their state and sell it? Yeah, it's like Coca-Cola bottling.
0:06:43
So you know Coca-Cola, United States. Yes, it's a licensing agreement for the formula. That's exactly what we're doing. That makes sense. I like that. So that's why we're like one of the four like we're like poised to grow. We're like is it still looking for investors because like we can we can scale this like in multiple states pretty fast because we're National Cannabis Industry Association, Chamber of Cannabis,
0:06:56
The Chamber of Cannabis?
0:06:58
Yeah.
0:06:59
Okay.
0:07:00
Yeah, Tina and Danny, they're the president, vice president. Cannabis Beverage Association, I feel like I'm missing one. Cannabis in the CIC, I can't think of what it stands for, but yeah, we like cannabis organizations and we're pretty well known. So that's what we're trying to grow the product as fast as possible. In fact, I just got named to the diversity, equity and inclusion committee for the National Cannabis Industry Association.
0:07:27
That's fantastic. So let me ask you a question. That's fantastic. How many stores here? How many stores are there here that sell cannabis in Las Vegas?
0:07:36
70 something.
0:07:37
70 something. And your product is in about 31 of those stores were lower half Okay, how about sir? Okay 30 35 40. Okay. Yeah, that is super fantastic Is it is it easy to to get the stores to sell your product? No, tell me about I mean Do you have to put together like a presentation and go in and pitch? Talk about it. What'd you have to do to get the product in the store?
0:07:56
So I'm gonna Chris explain that he got it in the store and I can tell you how we got expanded.
0:08:02
So how do you get it in the stores? So stores want to not only be able to sell a good product, you need it at a good price. So the fact that I make a quality product that you would find more in Whole Foods than Walmart, it leads to a little buzz sometimes. But when people sell it, it sells out every time. So that's why we've had the expansion process. Once we get people to actually just sell the product and actually try it and sell it. It sells out every time.
0:08:26
So Chris has the luxury of being an organic chemist. So when you have to write your own SOPs and chemistry work to get tested, that's literally what he does. So when people wanted to say they wanted to create their own brand, I was like, well, and that's what I'm going back crazy. Somebody's a chemist. Like, so you don't want to sign up on this. Like, yeah, I'm an FDA certified organic chemist. And I'm like, Oh, we can make some money together.
0:08:45
But listen to that though, he's a FDA certified. FDA certified, yeah, okay, that's a whole nother level.
0:08:55
He's probably the only black one in the state, I think he is, unless someone pops up.
0:08:59
That's the Food and Drug Administration, I know we're on college campus, the Food and Drug Administration, right. That's who that is for all you entrepreneurs out there. Listen, entrepreneurs, hey, if you wanna be in the business and you wanna be a distributor, you wanna sell some cannellini, you know,
0:09:15
yeah, let us know. Yeah. And then just just understand if you are out there, you're trying to do that. It's about relationships. You know, each one of these stores has a buyer, somebody who's going to buy a product for that store, and you have to be personally understandable by them, you have to know what they're looking for, you know, where that person's looking for like an add on item, something that you know, people will purchase something, then a final add on they can add to it, or if they're looking for an item that you can do sales on, you know, it just depends on the person. So you really have to be, I wouldn't say like an FBI agent, but you got to be able to read people and know what they're looking for. If not, it's hard.
0:09:48
It also helps that Chris has won 13 awards in the last three years.
0:09:52
That's fantastic.
0:09:53
That does help. In Nevada alone, it's been eight or nine awards in the past three years. We've been the best drink mix since 2020, 2021, 2022, and we're gonna take it this year again too. So it's about taste. So the flavor. So the flavor. So I'm, because I'm a chemist, I wanted to make my product special and different. So even the flavoring, so like that's the strawberry flavor right there, I make that with real strawberries. So I literally take strawberries and I mash them up and I steam it and I collect the actual terpenes from it, the flavoring, and I add it back to the product. So you said terpenes. What is a terpene of it. So like when you smell flowers, the same flowers or oranges will have the same terpene that some cannabis flowers do. Just because it's a smell, you only smell them because of the terpene. That's what you're smelling.
0:10:41
So let's talk about this, you're an organic chemist. So now tell us, where did you attend school?
0:10:47
Cal State Fullerton.
0:10:48
Cal State Fullerton, alright. So now was it hard to get in that program?
0:10:52
Huh? Was it hard to get in that program? I mean I got a scholarship out of high school. I ended up finishing my last two years. I went to high school here at Coronado and I went to Riverside King. And so finishing out my last two years in California helped with my scholarship to a California school. Okay. But yeah it was. So you're a Vegas native? Yeah. Nice. I went to elementary, middle and high school here.
0:11:14
That's fantastic. And what I love about this relationship is that we have a Vegas native and then we have an HBCU graduate right here.
0:11:21
We have a Morehouse man in the house.
0:11:23
Yeah, greatest school in the world. I'm very biased too.
0:11:26
Okay, so since we're on the Morehouse subject, we got to be the only cannabis company at the Morehouse Spelman Homecoming.
0:11:32
Wow!
0:11:33
Yeah, we gave away a thousand cannabis infused drinks, 300 pre-rolls, no 500 pre-rolls, 300 bottles of cannellini.
0:11:43
So for me going to a school on the West Coast, I'm not used to seeing that many, it's hard to say it like that, that many successful black people in one area and it not being a problem.
0:11:52
Ah yes.
0:11:53
You know, everybody was so happy and it was so different from here on the West Coast though,
0:11:58
it was different. That is how we conduct ourselves. All of the HBCU graduates that is how we conduct ourselves at our homecomings and we've been doing it for years decades decades we've never had incidents at our homecoming we carry ourselves it was
0:12:11
beautiful to see from somebody who's not used to stuff like that it was just
0:12:15
funny well we need to get you to a Howard homecoming right you experience now you got to come to Howard. It's cold up there. It depends on when they have it. So if they have it early in October it's still warm, but at the end it's cold. But I mean, Grambling, because you'll be, I mean, the HBCUs, I mean it's huge, and they all conduct themselves the same way.
0:12:36
As fun as it was, I don't care about the weather, we just got fun.
0:12:39
No, no, you will have fun.
0:12:41
All of them. All of them are great.
0:12:43
Every last one of them. Homecomings are absolutely amazing.
0:12:45
Oh yeah, I don't care about the weather.
0:12:46
If you are a cannabis connoisseur, we want you to try cannabis. It's something different. It's a drink. I'm going to try mine. They gave me a sample. When I get home, I'm going to try mine and see how much fun I have while I'm doing some work at home.
0:12:59
You're going to sleep amazing. If you're someone who's also new to cannabis and you're not appealing to smoking it, that just seems weird. I totally get it. This is something you can put a capful into your beverage. It's not going to be too overwhelming just enough you can actually try cannabis, see how it makes you feel. If it's a dose that you like, you can add more, but remember, you can't ever add less. So I would always start with a little bit and then work your way up.
0:13:20
I like it personally, because I use it for, I'm in grad school at UNLV, and I take Adderall. And the problem with taking Adderall, it takes you all the way, all the way up to move so high, then you typically have a bad crash. So I take cannabinoid at night, and it doesn't hit with that bad Adderall crash, it just goes to sleep naturally. And it's a good deep sleep. So that's the main reason. It's like it's my sleep aid. Cause I don't like Ambien and I don't like when you have the heavy narcotics they gave you. Cannellene is a clean product, no seed oils, no sugars, no artificial sweeteners, I want no preservatives. So it's just a healthy product that helps me go to sleep.
0:13:54
And that's a large thing on college campuses too. A lot of students take Adderall. It's a way to actually focus on these long papers you have to write for up for 14 hours doing stuff and can
0:14:04
cannellini help me write a great paper because I'm thinking about going back to the opposite you know that person the ADD part the person that's doing uh-huh
0:14:13
okay I got you calm you down
0:14:19
okay you know what's energy I got you know this one yeah you know because I'll be starting at 8 o'clock and was gonna get this this this this and this he starts at 5 a.m. ladies and
0:14:27
gentlemen every day yeah yeah I'll be bothering your life like but what time
0:14:32
do you cry the 5 a.m. club midnight 3 a.m. I can go hard I'm in there by 8 that's why I did that's why do you say Cali I'm gonna go to sleep I just won't go to sleep I just be up like doing stuff so I like I like my sleep to have this guy so much better in the last year. That's been like the biggest thing.
0:14:54
And so we even make a product that specializes for sleep. So we add ingredients, other cannabinoids in it that cannabinoids are the ingredients inside of cannabis that gets you high.
0:15:02
And it's all natural.
0:15:03
Yeah. And it's all natural. So it's a natural sleep aid that literally takes 15 minutes and you know, we've had people say they fell asleep in 10 minutes, you know, it took 10, but it's a, it's something you want to take before bed. And you can, it's not only helps you fall asleep, it helps you stay asleep. So it helps your muscles relax. So people who toss and turn and wake up, wake up throughout the night, cancels that. You can get a full night's rest, wake up six, seven hours later and actually be fully rested.
0:15:25
And they have a product for everyone because they have a sugar-free product. They have a plant-based product. They have a vegan product. They have an organic product and it comes in lots of flavors. Now my flavor today is Blackberry Sangria
0:15:36
and I cannot wait to try it.
0:15:38
So that's actually made from blackberries from Oregon.
0:15:40
Oh really?
0:15:41
Yeah.
0:15:42
So I try to source my fruit and I'm very picky on my flavors. Especially because I make them myself. So it's pretty fun. The strawberries are from California.
0:15:51
So how many flavors do you actually have?
0:15:53
Currently 17. We have 9 launched here in Nevada and then we have 8 different CBD versions available on our website. So it's, when we do, you know, CBD ones that we've sold in I think all 50 states currently. Which is when we had a Canadian order go out last week,
0:16:09
which was awesome.
0:16:10
That's great. So now if I was a young person that wanted to get involved in the cannabis business, how long would it take me to get a license to be in that business?
0:16:17
So, that's different. That's, that's, okay, so that's different. So if you're a young person wanting to get into the industry and get a license, that's gonna be something hard. These licenses are millions of dollars. And so my best bet would be find a niche, find a craft that you can do in the industry, even if it's outside the industry. Some of the richest people in cannabis make the packaging for their products. They don't even sell cannabis. They make bottles that you put it in or the bags that you put it in. You gotta think outside the box when it comes to this because if they're gonna, cannabis is still federally illegal, you have to know that. So to get around that, you have to do the things that are around it. So like the packaging company who only sells cannabis packaging, I think they're approaching a billion dollars Wow
0:16:53
Do you hear that entrepreneurs you can make a big pivot?
0:16:56
Last year of 27 billion dollars total so the crazy thing about cannabis only 20 billion the 27 billion only 7 billion went into a bank Account that 20 billion dollars more than my United States in cash Wow That's that's because it's a federal legal. It's a cash business. Yeah, we can't even have bank accounts. So we're speaking at the Morehouse Cannabis Literacy Club this year. One of my friends, Mike Lawson, he's the president, and he made a big thing about Kenmore by African-Americans and cannabis. Because right now, that's the one thing I notice about like there's only three black-owned brands in the whole state. We're like between one to three percent in almost every state and country. Right. And but the thing about the thing about so many african-americans the jail for drugs and it's just kind of alarming to me that they don't not doing something more out there getting 27 billion dollars in revenue when I want to see like more and like we consume a lot of cannabis even on the legal side to like african-american sales make up like 13% Wow yeah Wow 13%
0:17:59
so you know who else is buying cannabis?
0:18:02
Us.
0:18:03
The rest of the world.
0:18:04
Us.
0:18:05
We buy cannabis.
0:18:06
Yes, and we're only 13%, so 87% is everybody else. Wow. It just shows you just, everybody buys cannabis nowadays. The stigma of it, of being the devil's lettuce, or whatever term they had for it, it's kind of fading away here on the West Coast. Right. I wouldn't say in the South or the East, it's not as much, but here on the West Coast, it's pretty much faded.
0:18:25
So is it legal in most states now?
0:18:26
27 states have some type of medical program, 16 states are recreational. All the ones that are armored, like it starts in the Midwest and in the South. Yeah. You still don't ride through Texas with weed. You still don't do that.
0:18:38
Try not to ride through Texas. Can I carry this on the plane with me when I'm traveling?
0:18:41
It's under two ounces.
0:18:42
It's under two ounces. It's not about that, it does say that. Okay, that's good to know.
0:18:55
Yeah, it's under two ounces. It's under two ounces, that's what we're sticking with. Okay, okay, right. It meets the criteria. It's under two ounces. It meets the criteria.
0:19:04
I know when you're leaving LAX, they have a sign that they don't check for cannabis products. You have to clear it with the state you're going to.
0:19:16
Oh, is that right?
0:19:17
So if you're going from one legal state to the next, it shouldn't be a problem.
0:19:20
Right.
0:19:21
So from Nevada to an illegal state.
0:19:23
But if you're going to an illegal state,
0:19:24
then you need to be careful. Technically, we're not. That's all still in the gray area.
0:19:29
We just don't choose the same area.
0:19:30
But that's the problems we're fighting, is that you can fly to or drive to one state, and the state across the other line would be illegal. And you can't carry the same product you bought here and carry it over there. It just seems so baffling that they would have laws like this. We brought in $27 billion. We should be at a point where we're working on getting... It goes federally, it goes medical, legal, all 50 states. We're talking about $100 billion in the industry.
0:19:52
It's usually overnight.
0:19:54
So is it on the ballot? We have elections and everything coming up. What states has it on the ballot to become recreational or medical?
0:20:01
Missouri just passed. South Dakota voted it down randomly. And for here, for Nevada, they're changing some of the laws. I'm just looking at it today. They are going for, what are they going for? Oh, how to find, how are they able to find workers and industry people. They're making amendments to that and like the testing procedures of like driving while under the influence because the consumption law is coming available. But cannabis and on the federal scale, Joe Biden did let the Duke conduct research so we can see do actual rural testing to see what the long-term effects of cannabis will be. This is a step in the right direction towards decriminalization because you do some studies for it so I hopefully that will go get passed cuz like okay yeah there's there's 20 billion dollars could be collected as taxes I mean I don't know why we're not touching it 27 billion I'm sorry and that's why I have
0:21:01
him on the team I understand I I see that Wow we have gotten the education today we have I'm you know I'm sitting here my mouth I am thank you thank you Thank you. Thank you because an organic chemist. So what that says to me in a whole lot of ways, you know, you can do what you love. And you can merge it together, transfer the skills. You like cannabis, you're an accountant, you found something else to do instead of doing the stuff that we do.
0:21:29
Oh yeah.
0:21:30
You made it happen.
0:21:31
Oh yeah, I like building the brands. You took off the blue suit. Oh yeah, I did take off the blue suit.
0:21:35
I'm wearing it every now and then I'm wearing a blue suit. And when he first got here, he was wearing suits all the time. And then it got to the summer, and I was like, hey, bro.
0:21:40
Oh, it's too hot for the summer.
0:21:42
He might have to stop.
0:21:43
But right now, I'm in full suit season. I, of course, rock to be a company player, be a team man with the Cali shirt and hats. I got to stand out, represent for the company. It's free branding.
0:21:57
You are a walking billboard, but hey, that's what you need.
0:22:01
That's my man 100 grand.
0:22:02
That is super fantastic. Wow. Well, it has been fantastic speaking with you all today. My mind is just twirling about, you know, different businesses I could start to be part of the business. What stores are they? Let's talk about the stores they're in. So we're, we're, we're, where can we purchase your product?
0:22:18
my product out of the Native American tribe here the Paiute tribe so Nuuwu their Nuuwu North location Hardeen top-notch. Inyo, Shango, Shadow top-notch we love them. Yeah other black owned dispensaries. Shadow, Keman, Johnson, Ogden.
0:22:34
Where's that located? They're at Henderson. Okay. shango exhale deep roots deeper deep roots who else we doing
0:22:45
