0:00:32
It's cold.

0:00:33
It is cold.

0:00:34
It is real cold.

0:00:35
It is cold.

0:00:36
Well it is winter time.

0:00:37
Okay call it what you will.

0:00:38
But it is cold. But I want to say Happy Saturday.

0:00:40
Well it is winter time. Okay, call it what you will. But it is cold. But I want to say happy Saturday morning to you Rhonda. How are you? I am super fantastic. I cannot complain. I've had a fantastic week. And I'm just happy that the blessings keep rolling in.

0:00:56
I'm happy that you actually are happy that CES is here. Yes I am. You know.

0:01:00
CES was here I should say. Yes, it kicks off my year. So I love it. That's a good kick off. Good kick off. Well you know what kicks off my year, right? Taxes!

0:01:16
It is tax time.

0:01:17

0:01:57
That is super fantastic.

0:01:59
I am so excited, but one of my buddies is here though. Yeah, I'm excited to have her here. Let me tell you this real quick story. So for years, I am a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and So all my sorority, good morning. I will see you in a minute because we have a meeting this morning But for years I have been seeing one of my sorority's hair and I would see her in the meeting and she would you know Just turn her head. I'm like who does your hair? She would say Kim. I'm like hmm who does your hair next meeting she would say Kim. Then you I saw you when you first moved to Vegas. Rhonda who does your hair? You say Kim. I said hmm who is this Kim? And then some other people I knew I would see and they were like no Kim did they hair? I'm like who is this Kim? So I remember one it was Sunday morning I said Rhonda we need to do a photo shoot. Rhonda said okay so we gonna do it today. I said Rhonda can we do it, can you make it happen today? Rhonda said yes. So we make the photo shoot happen. I said well who doing your hair? Kim. I said Kim. I said alright well tell Kim, Kim is doing my hair too. That's right. So I go in and at the time my hair was very short. I walked in and Kim very pleasantly you know what can I do, what do you want? And I don't know what I said but whatever we came up with worked because she did hair she did makeup and that photo shoot I still use those pictures four years later so I want to say Kim is absolutely amazing you cannot have my 7 a.m. appointment though because that is my appointment at 7 a.m. we're gonna fight we're gonna fight about that I think I'm gonna win but 7 a.m. that's my appointment but Kim is absolutely amazing. She is here with us in the studio today

0:03:42
Welcome miss Kimberly

0:03:44
We're doing great, thank you for being with us today Kim has been an entrepreneur for how long now

0:03:48
Well over 20 years Wow

0:03:51
I do with my business and also I'm a corporate trainer. That's fantastic. That's fantastic So Kim what made you decide to start doing here? I'm a corporate trainer. That's fantastic.

0:04:01
That's fantastic.

0:04:02
So, Kim, what made you decide to start doing hair?

0:04:05
So my mom kind of put the bug into me years and years ago. So she'd buy me Barbie dolls every week and we would mix up food color to see if we could change their hair. And I would cut the hair and then I would mess up her curling irons. And that's how I figured out that the dolls had synthetic hair because I would burn them. And then she'd be mad and go, I'll get some more.

0:04:26
You can't use curling irons on synthetic hair.

0:04:29
Got it, note to self.

0:04:30
You cannot use curling irons on synthetic hair.

0:04:33
You can't do it.

0:04:34
Don't do it.

0:04:35
Note to self.

0:04:36
Note to self, go ahead.

0:04:37
So yeah, so she sparked that bug and her being an accountant by trade, my natural path was going to be to go to school for accounting. And she was like, you're going, and I wanna be a hairdresser. So why do you wanna just be a hairdresser? It's not just a hairdresser.

0:04:54
I can only imagine.

0:04:56
She planted the seeds. She was paying for accounting

0:05:00
and not for cosmetology. Back in the 80's and 90's our parents weren't paying. They didn't understand.

0:05:08
We weren't doing all of that. Mary was paying money to the school house. Not to the hair house. University. University right University exactly diversity not just so yeah, so but once she drank the kool-aid She was all in and so you know she she believed that I should learn how to do all types of hair because there's all the money with all the people

0:05:33
So it doesn't matter what it is. I like green Like we okay, but you're also what I love is you are just how your approach to doing hair because you just don't, because I wanted to be platinum, you told me no, but that's okay. But your approach, you look at the hair to see if they, I mean because coloring is something a lot of women do. You just don't throw color on people's hair.

0:05:54
Yeah, you have to go through a complete consultation. You have to look at what the canvas is in front of you and you have to know the underlying pigment you have to know really you look into their eyes and look at the the sparks in the eyes to see what tones would be palatable against their skin tone Are they warm and cool you also look at the condition of their hair and then you determine from there What will be you know that that will give them a nice look, right? Shape of their face, all of those different things. Cut and color goes in together. And then you have to look at it as their lifestyle. So what is your commitment to your hair? So I'm not gonna go ahead and do a total transformation for somebody that I'm only gonna see once a year. I'm not doing it. I know there's just people that will. I'm just not because I need for them to be able to be my walking business card and if they're out there looking a hot mess hmm it's not working for me it's not going to bring

0:06:59
me business love it love it I can say that when you do our hair because Rhonda and I are both clients and we I mean our hair always looks good and if it doesn't we call you right it is it is because I know I have plenty of times, Kim, I will come to your house. I need you to curl the bottom because I just need curls, something or something when I don't have braids. Yes. You have to trust your hairdresser and you have to listen to what they say. Listen, you have to listen. And I don't listen. I'm that I'm that client that doesn't listen. I'm the one. It's a love hate relationship. It is. It is. And we and we go at it for the whole hour that I am there. I'm still trying to get her to take my hair platinum. You're right. And business owners, listen, having your hair done is self-care. We always talk about self-care. When you're a customer of Kim's and you're getting your wash, blow, dry, and curl, it's

0:07:53
an hour.

0:07:54
You're only there for an hour.

0:07:55
One hour. One hour. Now if you're getting color and other things, it'll be a little longer, but listen, if you're just getting the basic wash, blow, dry, and curl. Kim has you in and out of one hour and then you're back to doing what you need to do. You're back to going to your meetings. You're back to going to your business to run it. Entrepreneurs, she's the most fabulous hairdresser you could have in this business that is aware and appreciates your time. Because your time is money. Your

0:08:16
time is money. But I also appreciate the fact that not only does she, she knows your hair. That's right. She knows your hair. So I can say to her, I can call her at night and okay so Kim this is what's going on well, Leah this is what you need to do. Okay Kim and it works. Mm-hmm. And it works. So I appreciate it having the relationship with the stylist. So we always talk about personal care. Mm-hmm. But Kim from what I understand you got

0:08:40
something else going on. Hmm. I got a couple of different things. Okay. I have like four or five streams of whatever it is. So I'm the lead hair stylist for the Raiderettes, Raiders team that's here in Las Vegas. Just win baby! Well we didn't win but you know. So but yeah I do that and then New Year's Eve I had the awesome opportunity to do the hair and for the dancers and the cover band who opened for Janet Jackson. At the Wynn Hotel for the private VIP event. Yes, for the private VIP event. It was awesome. And I'm also a corporate hair color, hair trainer for O.A. It's a new natural, well it's not new. They've been around since 1948. However, they are new to the to the US market. biodynamic farming, biodegradable, sustainability, just it's a new way of life. And so I'm doing that project. And just got my hands in just a whole bunch of things.

0:09:49
And you're also on TV too. Don't forget the TV. I do, yes, I do hair and makeup segments with my friend and colleague, Miguel Julio Beauty, once or twice a month. Yes. And I appreciate that because she is giving beauty tips because that is part of personal care because when you look good you feel good. That's right. Look good, you feel good. So if I'm a new client, I always like to do this. New client coming in, first time. Kim,

0:10:15
what is the process with you? It's a consultation. So before we do anything, not even wash or blow dry, we're going to sit down and we're going to have a consultation. So I want to know what it is that your hair journey has been up to the time that you've met me. I'm going to look at the condition of your hair, the texture, and I want to see what it is that your target hair color or hairstyle is. And then we'll determine what your commitment is. So if you say that I'm not a person who really does hair or I'm really not trying to really take care of it, then I need to craft a program for you and some styling products and a plan of action you know two three four six months a year down the road so that we have a success so I'm not going to go ahead and do a complete transformation on someone who says they're only coming in once a year and they're not really committed to their hair care because is that how I got to go is this like this idea right

0:11:14
go as light as I did. Right. Okay, got it. Yeah, because she you don't understand the the begging and pleading. That was a lot of begging. It was a whole lot of begging and pleading. Hold up, but she knows I will come get my hair done. Yes, you will. You know, and I had to, it was and it was negotiating because I had to negotiate that I wouldn't put my braids back in. Mm hmm. Until the hair was strong enough. And I had to sign the contract. Right. I had to sign, I bought the Kool-Aid. I bought the Kool-Aid like a mama did. I bought the Kool-Aid. But what I can tell you is your hair is healthier from going, I mean just by dealing with a stylist especially when it deals in hair care. Your hair is healthier. You feel good. You look good.

0:11:51
But it is maintenance.

0:11:52
It is maintenance.

0:11:53
It is maintenance.

0:11:54
And you know I love going to the hair salon. You know I put in my budget where I'm available to go every week because I have a lot of meetings and things and I always want to look my best and I get massive you know people telling me they love my hair here in Las Vegas and all over the world when I travel and actually some of my girlfriends from other states have flown in and had Kim do their hair so she has clients to fly in just to see her because they love the way she treats and cares for their hair. Well and also you want to know what you never know who you're gonna meet at Kim's salon. That's right. Kim's salon with Kim because I think I was there one Saturday morning and you know we Howard University you know Howard University alumni that's right and it was a man there for a woman there from Ben's Chili Bowl. Mmm Wow! Ben's Chili Bowl it was I mean part of the family that owns Ben's Chili Bowl and they were in a salon and we just had an amazing conversation we have a hair salon on U Street they're on U Street amazing conversation because you never know who you're going to run into. That's right. You never know. I want it to be a business connection always. Always. You never know who you're going to meet. I need a Rolodex of everyone. That's right. You do. That's fantastic. So tell us about, no but tell us about this other

0:13:02
venture. I want to talk about the other venture. Oh the hair care. Yes. Okay so I suffer with dandruff and so I have a lot of clients, well a nice number of clients that suffer with it and just different people that deal with like psoriasis or extreme psoriasis on the scalp. And so I know that there are other dandruff shampoos and different other things that are out on the market. However, there comes a line where I have to refer my clients to a dermatologist. And what always happens is that their dermatologist refers them back to me. I can treat the fungus because that's what dandruff is, it's a fungus. However, you need to go back to your hair stylist because your hair is going to be extremely dry and it's going to need a good conditioning treatment. And I needed to find, I want you know, a solution for being able to control the symptoms of dandruff but also being able to condition the hair so that we work on those two things simultaneously. It can be achieved. It's treatable. It is. It's treatable. It's a maintenance. So I look at it as incremental income on the business side of it. I know you guys would be happy to hear that, the marketing side, the accountant side. But as a person who provides service and experience, it's creating a solution to a problem that is not going away. Got it.

0:14:24
I want to say that you are listening to the Let's Talk with Leah and Rhonda show. I am Leah Crawford.

0:14:29
I am Rhonda Nolan and we are happy that you are here with us on this bright, beautiful Saturday morning. But guess what Las Vegas? We have another special guest in the house. We have Mr. Denmark West from Connectivity Ventures and he is here this week because he's been at CES.

0:14:46
Denmark, how are you doing?

0:14:47
Oh, I'm doing fantastic.

0:14:50
Now, how are y'all doing?

0:14:51
We're doing great.

0:14:52
Yes, yes.

0:14:53
Wow.

0:14:54
Just the stuff, man.

0:14:55
You want to know what technology. Can you believe, I mean, when I think about it, Rhonda, in our hands today, with these cell phones, we have whole computers.

0:15:06
We sure do.

0:15:07
Have a whole computer.

0:15:08
We were able to leave our offices.

0:15:09
You were able to do anything.

0:15:10
Stay on the phone, but y'all you know when we were walking in here today I was amazed about those glasses glasses that you guys were talking about because I'm still trying to come I'm taking off my glasses trying to see how can I use you know because if I don't have to have the earpiece I can just have the glasses work as the That's that's a dual function exactly tell us mr. What's what did you learn in your several days at CES? What did you see what products excited you?

0:15:36
Oh, there were there were a few that I thought were actually kind of exciting. And I think the way that I'd probably explain it to people who haven't been before is that anything that touches consumer electronics is here. This is the largest technology conference in not just Las Vegas, but in the country. And it is the largest conference in the United States. So it is massive. They have over 3,000 exhibitors. This year they had over 100,000 attendees. And so everything and anything that looks and feels like consumer electronics, somebody is here trying to show it to you. Wow. So there's two types. There's the type where you say like, hey, I kind of know what a smartwatch looks like. And they're going to give you a new version

0:16:19
of a smartwatch. Wow.

0:16:20
Right. Or I know what a flat screen TV looks like. They're going to show you a new version of a flat

0:16:28
screen TV.

0:16:29
You want to know what, and that's so funny because remember flat screen TVs used to be

0:16:32
heavy.

0:16:33
They sure did.

0:16:34
Now they're light as a feather.

0:16:35
They're light as a feather. And they have about 37,000 versions of TVs.

0:16:39
You get a TV!

0:16:40
You get a TV! You get a TV!

0:16:42
Everybody gets a TV.

0:16:43
Okay.

0:16:44
And they all have a bunch of different letters. O-L-E-D, 4K, and so it's a number of really interesting twists on the things that you know, that's the first category

0:16:54
Okay

0:16:54
The second category is like I have never seen or heard or thought about this before Or I didn't know this was possible or it's just something new So on the one hand say I actually saw some really interesting TVs Curved super thin, you know, light, extremely high definition, look like you could just walk straight into the screen. Wow. So that was interesting just in the stuff that I already knew about. But this is a better version, a richer version, a more technologically advanced version. Same with the smart watches or the advanced you know smart devices for your home, smart appliances, lots of those as well. So can you just walk off the street and go in the CDS? Or do you have to register? You have to register. You have to register. Now, if you register early, and you can work with an affiliate, you have to jump over. Got it. But if you can jump over those small hurdles, you can actually get in for free.

0:18:08
Because I think they have business meetings the first couple days and then the last two days they open it up to the local consumers to come in and see all the new technology.

0:18:17
What were you looking for new innovation coming out going forward this year that they were presenting at CES?

0:18:25
For me, I use this as just a table setting exercise for the year. This gives me a sense of where technology is. Got it. Because everybody's here. And getting a feel for what are the things where you're seeing more people show up, or what are the new ideas that seem like they have a number of new companies offering different alternative versions. It's like, okay, well I can see where the trends are starting to move.

0:18:48
Do they engage children? Because my son just started his technology class in middle school. He did. Say hi Nasir. Say hi. Go say hi. Oh see that's what I was. That's your Barry White voice? That's his Barry White voice. I tell you. He's got a young Barry White over here. I have a young Barry White. Hey I'm Nasir. I mean. Really? No he's a cancer. I'm just saying. But real quick though, Kim, because what we didn't do was give out your contact information.

0:19:20
Oh, okay.

0:19:21
Oh, got to give out your contact information. Okay.

0:19:23
Come on. So, it's 702-768-6343, and then I also have an IG account, which is Kim Morris and Company,

0:19:36
LV.

0:19:37
Okay, so we want to say that number one more time.

0:19:41
702-768-6343. Fantastic.

0:19:43
Now back to Mr. West.

0:19:44
Mr. West, you were telling me that you went to a very interesting media day with Paula

0:19:48
Abdul. What is Paula Abdul doing now? Well, you know, she keeps busy. But what she was showing off today was her signature audio glasses. Oh, wow. And so one of the things that was really interesting was that she was wearing her signature glasses. And I was like, wow, that's a really cool thing. And I was like, wow, that's a really cool thing.

0:19:56
And I was like, wow, that's a really cool thing.

0:19:57
And I was like, wow, that's a really cool thing.

0:19:58
And I was like, wow, that's a really cool thing.

0:19:59
And I was like, wow, that's a really cool thing. And I was like, wow, that's a really cool thing. And I was like, wow, that's a really cool thing. And I was like, wow, that's a really cool thing.

0:20:03
And I was like, wow, that's a really cool thing.

0:20:04
And I was like, wow, that's a really cool thing. And I was like, wow, that's a really cool thing. today was her signature audio glasses. Oh wow. And so one of the things that was really interesting is that she's actually got sunglasses she partnered with a company, Wonder What Custom, and they have the ability to not only allow people to listen to music or podcasts, but you can actually take meetings or phone calls. Oh wow. So you look at the sunglasses and they kind of look like sunglasses. You don't think of them as technology on somebody's face.

0:20:34
These are those men in black glasses. I saw a picture. Yeah, they look like those men in black glasses.

0:20:38
They had a version that actually.

0:20:40
So can you put prescription lenses in them also?

0:20:43
Absolutely. They actually allow for you to treat them like real glasses.

0:20:46
Wow.

0:20:47
And so one of their use cases, one of their value propositions is that they are sunglasses in the purest sense. So they can help to protect your eyes from sun rays because they have the UV 400 shaded lenses. So that helps to protect you from the damaging effects of sunlight on your eyes. And they also protect you from TV, computer, and mobile screens as well, with blue light resistance. For indoor types of potential light damage. And so, the first value proposition is, hey, we actually have sunglasses that'll protect your eyes. That's one. And if you want to use a prescription lens, you can actually swap that out. Second value proposition is they have an audio capability that doesn't require you to put anything on or in your ear directly. So, they put the speaker inside the temple

0:21:41
Right.

0:21:42
Really? So they put the speaker inside the temple of the glasses. Wow. And it's directionally capable so that if you're standing next to somebody, you actually don't hear the music like you'd expect in an open speaker. Oh, wow.

0:22:01
Because the audio, the sound, is directed into the ear,

0:22:05
even though it's not in or on the ear. Wow. So now I don't have to purchase the AirPod. Right. So two different scenarios. So the thing that they, the reason why they say they can get away with this is because it doesn't have that immersive sound. You can hear it clearly, but you can also hear what's going on outside. And so the thing that they say is this is a good use case for people who are either walking around or doing something else where they still need to make sure that if somebody

0:22:28
says hey, they're aware of what's going on around them.

0:22:31
Hey you're about to get run over.

0:22:32
Right.

0:22:33
You can hear somebody say hey you're about to get run over. Watch out! Or watch out that dog's about to bite you. Right. Whatever the case may be. But some of the AirPods you really can't hear what's going on around you. Yeah, especially if they're in the ear, if they're noise canceling, any of those scenarios you actually can't hear what's going on around you which is great for the sound experience The sonic experience is beautiful, but it's not it's not yeah It's not good for the individual if they end up in a situation where they can't hear the warning So how many colors of these glasses come in how many colors did you see when you met with them? Yeah, so I saw seven. Oh wow But that doesn't mean that's all they have. Okay. They had a display where they were showing various... And how much was this product and where can you purchase them from? So it was $199 at least that's what they told us. They said it starts at $199. You know they were trying to get that up sale in there. You know this is the basic model. You want some bells and whistles you have to pay up. Right, right, right. But they said that they expected to be in retail soon but as of now you can actually find them on Paula Abdul's website.

0:23:40
Oh, that's cool. That's cool. I was a Paula Abdul fan. You know, I love dancers, you know, because I wanted to be a dancer back in the day. So I love the Debbie Allens and Paula Abdul's of the world.
