Hi, this is Leah Crawford.

0:00:26
And I'm Rhonda Nolan.

0:00:27
Welcome to the Let's Talk with Leah and Rhonda Show. We're here for you and we're ready to go.

0:00:32
Let's do it! Good morning Las Vegas.

0:00:34
Hey Leah what's happening?

0:00:35
Good morning.

0:00:36
You want to know what? We are having a temper tantrum with the weather. I think that's the best way to describe this weather. Uh-huh. You know I've heard all different types of things like some days it's nice, some days it's cold, but the best way to describe this is a temper tantrum. I agree with you. Yeah, because it's nice, then it's cold. I mean you just don't know what to expect. I tell you this has been the cold this first quarter. I mean in a long in a long time long time, but it is March. We are in March of 2023 We are in March. Whoo. I want to say this. It's my birthday month So I am celebrating and well all the time this month dinners lunches going out enjoying myself This is my birthday and a smack dab in the middle. My baby will be here. I am so excited Is it right? Yeah, she will be here for my we're doing a photo shoot.

0:01:38
I gotta get it.

0:01:39
We're going to do a photo shoot.

0:01:40
Oh, wonderful.

0:01:41
And it's her wedding anniversary at the same time. So yeah, we're going to have a...

0:01:45
Is the hubby coming too?

0:01:46
Yes, in the spring break. So spring break. So we're going to have a good, good time. But I know we got a lot of stuff planned for March because March is Women's History Month.

0:01:55
It sure is Women's History Month.

0:01:56
So I'm looking forward to see what amazing events are in store for this month and to hear about all the fabulous women in and around Las Vegas that are doing things. Well in terms of women events the Nevada Women's Business Center is doing Women's Her Story Month and they're having their ninth annual luncheon. It's going to take place on Friday March 17th and for more information you can visit the Nevada Women's Business Center website. Also this month, the United Way is actually preparing for their fashion show and luncheon that's taking place on April 22nd at Red Rock Hotel in the Red Rock Ballroom. That seems like that's gonna be fun. I think I'm gonna pop in on that. That event starts on Saturday, April 22nd at about 11 a.m. and I want to see what the United Way is up to. So I'll probably pop in on that. But tonight, tonight, tonight the Urban Chamber is having their board installation event at Mariposa Restaurant. That's tonight at 6 p.m. from 6 to 8 and they will be installing the new chair, the new secretary, and the new treasurer. That's going to be an amazing event and Mariposa is a very nice venue. It is a nice venue. You know we were there last week with the 100 Black Men of Las Vegas and the Howard University alumni. They had a happy hour there last week. It was really nice. It's really nice. It's a beautiful location. Easy to get to. Yeah. A lot of parking. Lots of parking. Lots of parking. A lot going on. And the food was actually good. If you are a catfish lover, they had catfish and french fries. They had quesadillas. Their menu was vast but the food was really good and they serve it to you quickly and hot. You know I love my food hot. I know you love your food hot. You and us here, y'all love your food. Hot food, hot food. Love it. I can say that's a lot but also we have the cooking class and I know last time we missed it, we forgot to promote it. The cooking class is coming up in March. So the 100 Black Men of Las Vegas, they do a virtual youth cooking class. We always promote it because having families in the kitchen cooking a meal, I mean, first of all, it's funny because you realize how much you don't listen

0:04:18
and follow directions.

0:04:21
Right?

0:04:21
And the food, they give you the food. So all you're basically doing is spending time with your children and teaching them how to cook. And it's an amazing, but you have to sign up for it. Yes, and the sign up is always at Eventbrite.com and this month the class will take place on Tuesday March the 28th at 6 p.m. So all you have to do is sign up your child at Eventbrite.com. It's the 100 Black Men of Las Vegas Youth Virtual Cooking Class. You can look for that. Sign your child up and then once you sign your child up the week before the event you will receive an email from me telling you where to pick up the ingredients for this mystery meal that we will be cooking. For the mystery meal and they have I know last month they did what was it? It was baked Creole fish with andouille sausage and shrimp gravy. Okay so y'all and okay so I know it might be some cooks out there. I'm not one of them, and I don't claim to be. But even my food turned out to be very good, right? I am not a cook. And I'm the person that's supposed to cheer the cook on in the kitchen. That's the person that I am. But I sat there, and I cooked my meal, and it was good because they walk you through step by step. So if you're a beginner, I'm not even a novice, a beginner in the kitchen, you just got all the stuff but don't know how to use it, that's me. This is a good way for you to learn your way around the kitchen. Learn your way around the kitchen and you're working with children. The food is provided. It was, no, because I giggled the whole time. Because you have yourself and you only need your cell phone. Yeah you need your cell phone or your tablet or your computer and you basically you turn on your screen and you listen to the directions and she even measures the food out for you. So you don't have to measure. She gives you the ingredients they're measured and you just lay it out but it's a good time for you and your family. So it's 100 Black Men in Las Vegas. They do this monthly. This monthly event virtual youth cooking class and you can always sign up either on Facebook actually or event bright But I also want to thank chef Jeff Henderson He was our guest chef and he is amazing with all of us the students and the parents and the children I mean, I mean the students and the parents because with the with the parents, you know some you know, sometimes we think we know but we don't And we saw that and he was very kind and and helping us through and then y'all know we not timely. We always don't show up to the online event on time. But he's willing just where you are to walk you through because there's steps to it. You can't go from A to G. You got to go A then do step B then step C. He walks you through it and he's very patient. He's very patient. Very patient. And he has a wonderful project called the Chef Jeff Project. Every Saturday morning he does a pop-up restaurant right at his office over on North Las Vegas Boulevard. He makes something different every Saturday morning and you can pop by from like 8am to like 12 noon. He does chicken and waffles. He does chicken and biscuits. He does just all different types of things that he and the students there create and then they sell it to the public to raise money for his non-profit. But I love it because the kitchen, right? So the kitchen was the room in the house. I remember back in the days, we used to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

0:07:45
That's right, with grandmother and mother.

0:07:46
Grandmother, mother, y'all were making meals and it wasn't just Thanksgiving. Right. It was all the time. It was because I know we ate dinner every night at 5 o'clock. Yeah, we ate dinner probably, well, at my grandmother's house, we ate dinner at 4 o'clock. So right after school, she had dinner prepared when we came home from school. We were in elementary school. Then of course if we got older, you know, we had sports and stuff after school, we didn't probably eat till about 7. Well no, our dinner was 5 o'clock. It was 5 o'clock. Period. It was 5 o'clock. So whether you were there or not, dinner was at 5 o'clock. And I, and my great-grandmother, it was my great- grandmother. Mm-hmm. You didn't go in her kitchen without her permission when she shut it down. I understand. Yeah, when she shut it down, that was it. Like if you didn't make it on time to receive the dinner. Now if you were working okay she would you know have a plate for you set up. Mm-hmm. And if you were working. If you were working. Right. If you were working. Right. But if you weren't working you better not touch her. You better you don't even look at the kitchen. You know you just walk you know and I think about it now I didn't even go get a glass of juice in her kitchen. Oh cuz she ran the kitchen. Oh she no she ran her house. Yeah yeah that's how it was my grandmother was like that dude she had we would eat at four and then when our parents would come to pick us up at 5 or 530 she would have dinner for them too so she would allow them to eat if they wanted to or they could take it with them but then when she cleaned her kitchen and washed all the dishes and shut it down it was over. It was over and her house was put back together the same way. I think about it now because I know me and my son will tell him we just do we just go with it's no rhyme or reason but that discipline Just that discipline of when the kitchen is shut down That's it. I see when we spent a night with her on the weekends on a Saturday morning She would she would get up she would make breakfast and they made breakfast and they made breakfast They make breakfast and she would say okay now it's time to get up and go eat breakfast He had to go wash up. He had to go wash up, you know, brush your teeth, wash your face. You can go in and eat breakfast, right? By the time you came back to your bedroom, your bed was made. It was no getting back in the bed, laying down, any of that. You had to march directly to the bathroom and finish taking your bath, or shower, or

0:09:50
whatever, put on your clothes and be ready for the day.

0:09:52
Get ready for the day.

0:09:53
It was just, you want to know, it was a different, a different time. And we, I guess with social media and all the other things, we kind of sometimes miss that. Right. That family time, that discipline, everything was structured. Mm-hmm. You know it wasn't just you know you go and and just be. You know because I know me I'm running to where we going we're going to McDonald's, we're going fast food, we're doing something. But they didn't do that. My grandmother cooked seven days a week. So did mine. Breakfast, maybe lunch for my grandfather, and then dinner. We had a schedule like we knew Monday was chicken wings.

0:10:26
Right.

0:10:27
We knew Friday was fish. Mm-hmm, you know and we Saturday we might get a hamburger. Mm-hmm, but she and she went grocery shopping every Thursday. Mm-hmm, and it was it was a routine.

0:10:37
It was a routine.

0:10:38
It was a routine.

0:10:39
That was her.

0:10:39
Yeah, my grandmother had the same thing. The only day she did not absolutely not cook was Mother's Day.

0:10:44
It wasn't happening.

0:10:45
Oh and that and this so funny because that's now that you say that I think back we always went to dinner on Mother's Day. That's correct. We always went out to a restaurant on Mother's Day. It was a nice restaurant and the family, the entire family, was there and I used to sit back and just and I used to look around like wow that's a lot of y'all's take a long time for the food to come. Now sometimes we would go to sit down restaurants but we really would try to find a buffet so we would find a buffet at a country club because country clubs did buffets on holidays and we would go there and celebrate Mother's Day. No, ours was always a sit down napkin. You had to get dressed up.

0:11:22
Well, we had to get dressed up now.

0:11:23
We had to get, you could eat faster at the brunch. No, it was sit down. And remember the old rules because you didn't touch your food until everybody's plate. That's right. Was on the table and you prayed over your meals. I know it was just different. And I think sometimes I miss those days, just the values, the family. But real quick, it's March, so for all my business owners, y'all know a tax deadline is coming up. And you know, that's what I do. And we're in our office now filing extension. So if you are year in, like calendar year, like most people, and you have an S-corp or C or C Corp, your filing deadline is March 15th for the extension. Extension or file the return. File the extension period. I would call your CPA, attorney, tax preparer, whoever prepares your taxes just to get the extension. If you're not post pandemic, we're post pandemic and everything is going back to business as usual. So you want to do if you don't know, because I hear a lot of business owners, especially during the pandemic, a lot of people went into business for themselves, right? And they don't know what they don't know. So if you know someone that started a business, you know, just ask them, well, did you file your extension? You know, did you do your taxes? Because you have to do a tax return, right? right nonprofits because I had some people come in and nonprofit statuses were revoked they said of their nonprofits in 2017 2018 you know didn't do the 990s 2018 2019 2020 because it's three years for it to be revoked they weren't aware that they had to do a tax return because they hadn't done anything with the nonprofit oh okay even if you made you doesn't know money you have to send in the form and say zero it doesn't it's not even a form that Say zero it's a form that says I did less than 50,000. It's a 990 in oh, but you have to and all Nonprofit returns have to be sent in electronically. Oh, okay, okay, so you want to contact a professional? Mm-hmm they need to be sent in electronically Okay for nonprofits if you don't know you don't know but if you're listening you know someone that's set up a non-profit because you don't own a non-profit right set up a non-profit tell them that if you don't file in three years you go on a auto revoke list doesn't mean you're revoked right but you're about to right because once they revoke you then you got to do some things to get all over again yeah you got to do some things to get reinstated Wow if you catch that time period you know and again people think you know I set this up and you know it's not easy that when you setting up a nonprofit, this is not an easy process. Take care of it. Best practices, even if you're not doing anything, file the return every year, like you update when you update your Secretary of State, get that return file. Just best practices. Just do it every, every year. Because I know we went through all of the ones that we've set up over the years to go back and check and some people's were Revoked Wow. Mm-hmm and out and I just I've made a friendly phone call. Hey You know, oh, I didn't know I was like you want to know what that's something we need to talk about Yeah, cuz they said that they really they didn't know they assumed that because they hadn't done anything And I was like, well when you're ready to do something, you just want to always be I'm glad you said that because I did Not know that I didn't know that if you had not done anything that if you you know you could be revoked. You can. You can because you're not doing anything. It's what you need it for. Right. It's a public charity. It's a public what I mean it's a public foundation. You're not doing anything. And like I said best practices is if you know you've set one up or if you're a part of one that has been set up just make sure that they file the 990. The 990. It's a 990N.

0:15:15
990N.

0:15:16
990N. You know, you set up an account with IRS. It's like the other thing I want to say real quickly. Any and everybody, IRS account.

0:15:24
Set it up.

0:15:25
Okay. Set it up.

0:15:27
Why do you, and people say, well, I don't want to, I don't want them to know.

0:15:30
Set it up.

0:15:31
Why do you want to set it up? We've had clients come in and they thought that past returns were filed, returns weren't filed. They needed to get transcripts or they owe the IRS wasn't sure of how much they owed and they were depending on letters. Well, you don't have to depend on letters. People that were identity theft. And they have to get pin numbers every year. So you got the pin number attached to your social security number. I mean, little things you need we're in this digital age we need to be just on top of our biz handling our business that's right um because if they want they can find you anyway that's not not gonna hide and if you were looking for if you had been the victim of identity theft like I have and you were looking for your pin to come in the mail it doesn't come like that anymore you have to have an account with the IRS you have to go into your your IRS account and then you have to go into your correspondence and the letter is there from the IRS saying, Hello, this is your new PIN. This is what you give your tax preparer every year to file your taxes for you. You get a new PIN every year because they want to make sure it's you. They want to make sure it's you. That's very important because we had someone that had, they, past years, hadn't filed past years. I'm going to share this because we, people just don't know they have went to different prepares mm-hmm and nobody was able to get their returns filed and I'm like because the pin number is for any return that you file in that year that's correct so even if you go back six years use the same pin number for all those years it's the same pin number for all the if you file them so say I haven't filed my returns, I'm going to say 2020, 2021, 2022. You come see me. I know you have a PIN number. The PIN number that you got for 2023 is the PIN number that you would use for the 2022 to 2021 and the 2020. Because the PIN number is attached to the year that you actually filed the return. Not, I got a 2022 PIN with a 2022 return, a 2021 PIN with a 2021 return. Even though that's how it's supposed to work if you timely file. Okay, I was just about to say, if you timely file, I have a new pen every year. You will get a new pen every year, but if you have to do back, you use the same pen number that comes with that year. Oh. And we were, you know, because this is what we do, and we team all on one thing, okay, y'all, we've got to figure this out. And just being able to read the correspondence, understanding what is out there. What I love about our office is everybody's a VIP client. Everybody's a VIP client. So no matter how much or how small, you've got one WC, you've got a whole bunch of stuff. The time that it needs for you to feel comfortable to have a conversation with you, that's what we do. We're not running you through like, you know, we're not running you through. It doesn't work for us because we like to have a relationship. You know, and I want to say congratulations. I had some I can't say their names, but congratulations to all the ones that are listening that just became homeowners, because we got a few clients that just became homeowners. And that's what you know, that's what small business owners, they are small business owners, small business owners just became homeowners, but they trusted us. And it was a process. It wasn't they woke up on Friday and on Monday, they were in the house. No, this was a process. And we're talking about, they came into our office, it was probably a couple of years. Couple of years of working together, developing different habits. I think when Alicia Taylor was on here, she talked about that. Developing the habits, knowing what you want, setting the goal, and then putting the processes in place to get there. And our office, we work with people just to make sure we can make that happen. You know, we had Cliff Warren talking about the path to home ownership, right? No, just what working in conjunction with people because owning home American dream, right? That's right, and it's hard It is hard. It is hard to get into that first property. Yeah, it's hard But once you get the hang of it, you're good to go. It becomes simpler, but it's preparing You know what this you know, what this especially as an entrepreneur because we got a bad habit We want to write off everything. I want to write off the shoe that I bought because I had to use that to go see the client. And I'm like, you can't, no, but I had to get that shoe. You had to get that shoe. So that shoe was the one you had to have, right? But just understanding as entrepreneurs, how do we plan better with the money that we're making? You know, how do we budget? How do we price our products? And, you know, I think most of the time we do sit down and talk about how do you price your product? You know, how do you know if your business is yelling, saying, yo, you need to do something different, this is not working. Right. And then how do you pivot and change to do something else? You know, so just, I mean, I know we got some future people coming because I'm starting to hook them up. That's right. But again, the cooking class, 100 Black Men of Las Vegas, you go on Facebook or on Eventbrite, right? And it's there. You just type that in the search engine, it comes up. Sign up. And if you have friends, tell them about it. It's for kids of all ages as well. It's for kids from ages from 5 to... As long as you feel comfortable with them. I mean, you have to be in there supervising them.

0:20:46
Yeah, yeah.

0:20:47
You got to be in there supervising them because, you know, kids cannot use knives and fire by themselves. But it is fun. It is a lot of fun and it's a family activity. It's a family activity and it's a meal that y'all get to sit down. And if it's not, because we had one time when it wasn't good and my son and I, we looked at each other and we were like, yeah, we messed up that one. I was like, yeah, Naz, I think we messed up that one. But there were times when the food was actually good and we made the recipes again. You know what I like it when I hear parents say, oh my child didn't eat spinach, but they do now. Or my child didn't eat squash, but they do now.

0:21:24
It's when the child learns how to cook the food themselves, and then they taste it and like it. Voila.

0:21:31
Well, no, it's a different, I mean it's something different, right? Yeah, exactly. And it's spending time with children. It is. You know, not everybody on a cell phone because everybody has their own computer like you know like what's now what's looking at a cell phone. You know but everybody has a computer right? Mm-hmm. And you know we're so engaged in the Instagrams and the Facebooks and the TikToks and whatever social media setting you're in that we're really not interacting with each other. And we should. And we should. You know having a good conversation about what happened today, what's going on and and smiling and laughing you know because we can still have a good time. I know it's hard for you entrepreneurs because some of you are at work during the dinner time but hey maybe breakfast is the meal that you engage with with your children. But what I love is because this event is once a month, it's just one day, it's just one night. It is one night. It's just one night. Just one night, you and the family. Yes, I'm promoting family. You and the family together, cooking a meal, right? The food is provided. I can't say it enough. The food is provided. And, you know, and if, well, let me ask you this. If I have a larger family, would you, can I get more food? We do. For families that are a little larger, we give them more food. We want to make sure everybody's. That everybody has enough food to eat. Yeah, so again, I'm gonna say it again a hundred black men in Las Vegas We're going to keep on promoting this not as much probably in the future shows, but we're going to keep on promoting this Brent event bright Facebook go in sign up the other thing Jesse and Lisa Farrell you said they did novel they did How you leave them feeling? Yeah entrepreneurs. Mm-hmm. You want to take your business to the next level leave customers feeling good Lisa and Jesse have created a workbook for you. Mm-hmm. That all you have to do is read and follow the instructions. Read, follow the instructions. 20 minutes a day. Read, follow the instructions, go through the book. It's how you leave them feeling. You can get it on Just Talk. Mm-hmm. On his website, JustTalk.com and it's you looking at you so that you can be the best version of you, especially as an entrepreneur.

0:23:45
That's right.

0:23:46
You need customers as an entrepreneur. And when you leave people wanting more, they become return customers.

0:23:53
Right.

0:23:54
If you don't have customers right now in your business, you have to figure out what you're doing wrong. You do. And you have to look in the mirror. You have to look in the mirror. Exactly. Take a good look and see where you are, what you're doing, and how you're doing it. And sometimes it's a hard look. And you should be having these conversations with your mentor because if you're having a problem in your business and you're struggling in a particular area, if you're having the conversations with your mentor who has been in this type of business before and has a wealth of knowledge, they will help you work through it, I believe. Well, the other thing too is one thing I look at is the numbers. So you can tell especially year over year, month over month. So for some industries it's ebbs and flows. So my industry we know we make more money in the beginning of the year. Right. Might not be as much as in December. So don't let that December bad month means that you're not a good business owner. That's right. Understanding your how your business flow is, what's going on, what's consistent, being able to compare year over year. So while Rhonda talks about having a mentor, if you don't have one get one. That's right. And pick a good one. A mentor, a coach, and I always say a therapist. Absolutely. As a business owner, you need a therapist because sometimes some things happen that are beyond the scope of the coach and the mentor. Mm-hmm. You need somebody that's professionally licensed to help you.

0:25:16
And if you have a team, you should hire, you should take a one day off and hire a coach to come in and talk to your entire team and get them revved up and excited to be at work and to help take your business to the next level.

0:25:28
To help take your business to the next level because sometimes it takes a team. It does take a team. And if the team is motivated, as far as I can tell you, my team is amazing. I love my team. I love my team and we're building so and they enjoy it. Everyone knows their lane.

0:25:40
Exactly.

0:25:41
And we're respectful of everybody else's lane.

0:25:43
Exactly.

0:25:44
You know, and we just giggle and laugh sometimes when things happen. We're like, and we do group things all the time. Yeah, all the time to work through. Okay, so we got to work through this issue. How do we work through that? And if we have to call somebody else in to help us, right? No, that's what we do. But we pride ourselves on being confidential on being just providing a good service, a good service.

0:26:02
That's fantastic. That's the first thing all entrepreneurs should think about is providing their customers good service. Because word of mouth can make you or break you.

0:26:11
We used word of mouth for the first seven years of our business. Eight years of our business it was strictly word of mouth. No advertising. But if you're looking for a tax home, you know, contact us. 702-382-5737. Again, 702-382-5737. We are open Monday through Friday from 830 to 4. Hey, guess what Las Vegas? We forgot to tell you. We went to a fabulous event Tuesday night. We went to see the NBA G League at the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson. Go see them y'all. You must go see them. Y'all gotta go see them. You gotta support them. They were playing Iowa and they played Iowa Monday night and Tuesday night and they won

0:26:57
on Monday night and they won on Tuesday night.

0:27:01
They won both nights. No, they won both nights. We were actually there both nights and Tuesday night they did a tribute to the Divine Eye. So all the Greek organizations. I want to say good morning to all my Sororas. I know we are on our way to our meeting but good morning, good morning. We had a good time. And they had the HBCU alumni chapters there. Yeah, we had all the HBCU alumni chapters there. So Howard and Fisk and all those wonderful schools were there in attendance to watch the NBA G League at the Dollar Loan Center. And the Dollar Loan Center is quite beautiful. Every seat was a good seat. It didn't matter where you were sitting. You could see the arena floor very well. And then I had the opportunity of actually having dinner there. They have a restaurant inside there that was really good. Well let me tell y'all a secret because that wasn't my first time going. The restaurant there, you can see the city from the balcony. It is absolutely... But I like scenic reasons though.
