Hi,
Unknown Speaker 0:25
this is Leah Crawford. And I'm Rhonda Nolan.
Unknown Speaker 0:28
Welcome to the let's talk with Lee and Rhonda show. We're here
Unknown Speaker 0:31
for you and we're ready to go. Let's do it. Good morning. Las Vegas. How does everybody feel on this? bright, beautiful Saturday morning?
Unknown Speaker 0:42
This bright, brisk Saturday morning?
Unknown Speaker 0:45
Oh, it is brisk,
Unknown Speaker 0:46
brisk. Brisk. I love this leather. Oh my god, this is my favorite time of year. I love it that. I mean, well, I fall anyway, being from back east because it's colorful. It's a different set of colors. Lively. I'm glad we don't have the leaves falling from the trees. But love being here in Las Vegas. I'm happy. But
Unknown Speaker 1:07
it's so interesting. This year, we've had really crazy wetter weather. It started in triple digits in May. And we had triple digits all the way up until you know, the end of September. And now typically when it's just a beautiful 70 You know, 80 degrees in October. It's 55 degrees. It's cold. So this is this is the coldest October we've had in a long time.
Unknown Speaker 1:31
Love it. I'm okay with it. I'm okay with it. I Do I Do I Do. I can wear my cowboy boots, and all my boots and stuff. I love it. I love it. Alright, so what are we today? What are we talking about today? Well, we don't
Unknown Speaker 1:43
mob businesses, we want to encourage everyone out there to support a small business support small business, we are getting ready to go into the holiday season. And the small businesses will absolutely need your support so we can get through the end of the year. So you might want to pick a restaurant or a card shop or a barber shop or a beauty salon or a nail salon. Any of those places where those are small businesses, go ahead and make your appointments and get on there and you know, find out what they have to offer
Unknown Speaker 2:12
and good let's start supporting small businesses. I am a small business owner, you are a small business owner. And we count on our community to support us and we give good services. So he has support yes or no I'm a restaurant tour. So I support the restaurants. I do too. I support the restaurants I enjoy going to eat at local businesses because sometimes you meet the owner, I mean you just it's a different feel.
Unknown Speaker 2:36
I do too. And I was over at eat in downtown Okay, couple weeks ago, and now they've opened up their patio because it's cooler outside. So now you have the opportunity to eat inside or outside. But I had a fantastic breakfast about a week and a half ago over there. I love that restaurant and this you know so many other small restaurants I love to have indoor outdoor patio.
Unknown Speaker 2:55
I like down you know downtown as my as much as I like the tie. So I've been trying to get I've been going to lunch every time a lot. Seven thing Carson's have your seven cars and yeah, so yeah, so our since kitchen is good Carson's
Unknown Speaker 3:08
kitchens. Good. So get out there and support your small businesses, you know,
Unknown Speaker 3:13
I know and then I can go to class a jewel class and get a drink. So there are a lot of small businesses in and around to Vegas, Las Vegas, I would just I would support them because they are there. They're out there providing services there. They made it through the pandemic they did made it through the pandemic. So by making it through
Unknown Speaker 3:33
bravo to all the small businesses that made it through the pandemic, I know we got a little bit of go
Unknown Speaker 3:39
a little bit to go but well, you want to let that I love it because I got our Howard University Journal last night. And they they were talking about this is our new normal. So as we get into our new normal, our new normal says, yeah, that's my alarm. I know I'm supposed to be waking up. That's my new normal. Know that. That's the peloton thing. Alright, my new normal. So what the new normal says I mean, and they were just talking about just how do we get this change? How do we acquiesce to this change? And I think we're doing it you know, we're wearing our masks people, some, some are vaccinated, some are not. We're wearing our mask, and we're being responsible for what is going to be our new normal. And it's interesting because we're living in it and it's evolving, right? So 20 years from now, when they talk about this, we're gonna be 20 years older. And we'll say it's 20 years more mature. And we can be like, Oh, well, yeah, we remember it. You know, I lived through it. I experienced it something like our parents did with the civil rights movement, living through it, and experiencing, experiencing it, and being a part of it, but I'm praying that everybody is being responsible. You're wearing your mask, and washing your hands real. Wash your hands, wash your hands, vaccinated or not. I mean, the choice is yours. And now we're pushing people just to get vaccinated. A lot of it's free. And we want you to be safe so that you can live to tell the story about how you made it through this vaccine. I know, we talked about on our last show, we talked about insurance. And we were really digging into insurances is the end is coming up to the end of the year, this is a good time for you to call your insurance provider. And I know for some people they don't know like, it's ironic to me when you ask who's your insurance provider, and they're like, I don't know, how you don't know who your car insurance is through, okay, got it, figured out who your car insurance is through, or your home and owner's insurance and have a call with the to have a call with that agent and talk about what's going on build a relationship, so that you can make sure that you are properly insured. Because what hurts is when you see people that have untimely deaths, and this stuff is not taken care of, and we can preach it and preach it and preach it. I know for me going through something real special right now with a cousin that is that end of life given 30 days live, what I can say is everything is in order. So now it's just a matter of us waiting, you know, for the day that he quote, you know, he closes his eyes. But everything isn't is an order. Well, it's been playing for years. But now the reality of it is he gets his children upon it, I have to execute that will, which pushes back to just having a plan and having your stuff in order. And it's not complicated. It's not difficult.
Unknown Speaker 6:34
All right, now is the time to build relationships with all the key people in your business life. Your bankers, your insurance brokers, your vendors. Now, is that time to build that relationship? Because you have time to do it.
Unknown Speaker 6:49
Yeah, Tom? Well, you have you should? I mean, well, if you should, right, because like, Okay, you talk about your banker. As a small business owner, its pivot, I mean, Pivotal, to build a banking relationship. And there are a lot of small business bankers out here. Bank of Nevada has an amazing team. And they build relationships, because they are business bank, they build relationships, small business owners, Nevada State Bank has an awesome team, local banks, they build amazing relationships, the credit unions, Clark County credit union, same thing. They have a small business banking team, you can build the relationships US Bank, the same thing. And it's like, when you those bankers, and Valley Bank is another one, those bankers are open and want you to come in and talk to them. And they can help you grow. When you get ready to talk about the things that you want to do. I know one of my goals is to buy a building. I've been talking to the same banker now for about two years, and developing a plan on what we need to do. They laid it out for me, I have to do the work. And it's like, they can help you achieve your goals. But you have to build a relationship. And sometimes the relationship is this Hey, my name is Leah Crawford. And, you know, I'm your customer. And you'll be shocked at the response you get because they want to be and that's part of your job. They need to build businesses and if you grow, they grow. That's right. You know, you talked about the insurance agent. I taught my insurance agent update last week, you know, he was like, it's your turn. I was like, Okay, so 10 meals on you want on me? That's fair, right? And it took me no, seriously because I'm like, you get paid a commission. I don't use the insurance, but I'm well insured. And having the relationship with them allows me when he knows something is going on in my life. He's familiar enough with the policies to say, okay, so you just bought a new car. This is what you need to insure it. While I was sitting in the dealership buying a new car, I called him and was like, they offered me GAP Insurance. What do I do? He was like, you take it, okay, got it. And we're just having the relationship that he would pick up the phone, when I call. And it's not hard to build those relationships. It's just a simple conversation. And he has simple conversations banking account, I'm an accountant. I have the relationship with my clients, when they're intimate. When I have interesting tax issues, I get phone calls. And I'm like, Alright, so what are we doing? How are we doing it? Okay, so let's talk about the pros and the cons. And let's have a real conversation. You know, I've had clients on my phone crying about different, you know, just life things that affect their financial stuff. And it's real and a place of trust to right, because I'm talking about their money. And people get real, particular when you're talking about their money, and they like when they don't hear it again. So, yeah, building relationships, you got to build a relationship and as a small business owner, you sure
Unknown Speaker 9:52
do. This month the SBA celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month. So for all you small businesses Is that have Hispanic owners and partners congratulations you know less support the Hispanic community less support the food trucks and all the restaurants are you know
Unknown Speaker 10:12
it good oh my god yeah oh my god so late night right so we're gonna late night we know Rhonda we should get up because you know I go to bed at eight o'clock got a call me and wake me up right? So we should get up at like 1030 and ride around and like get a taco from like four trucks we should we should do that absolutely just laugh and joke and sit outside Yeah, I think we should make it the field trip
Unknown Speaker 10:37
yeah we should field trip so everybody's support your Hispanic businesses they have small markets they do a great job with all types of food and things of that nature and they have spices and just all kinds of fun stuff you know, they're also what have nice car washes and things of that nature. I see a lot of different you know, detail car washing, you know, stop and get your car detail that you know, stop every car every now and then it's nice to get your car detail. You know, you spend 20 bucks you know and get the whole thing clean. versus you know, going to a you know, cheaper drive thru and I go to those two don't get me wrong, but I also try to support those small
Unknown Speaker 11:15
car washed a lot though.
Unknown Speaker 11:16
You do? Yeah. Because me
Unknown Speaker 11:18
you were riding when David goes car wash. I was like, Oh, we just we just won't go to Okay, good. We're gonna do when you have
Unknown Speaker 11:23
a father.
Unknown Speaker 11:25
We just won't go to the carwash. All right,
Unknown Speaker 11:26
when you have a parent that worked for one of the big three cars are very important. And my father never drove around in a dirty car. So he always instilled in us to keep your car clean. You keep your house clean. You keep your car clean, because people judge you.
Unknown Speaker 11:41
Got it. Got it. Got it. Okay, that's understood. tax wise. All right, we are in October in third quarter ended not 30. So for small business owners, if you have payroll, you know that your payroll documents to do payroll documents non 41/3 quarter now 41/3 Quarter modified business tax is also do third quarter Nevada unemployment tax. Yes. So if you had employees who have to pay unemployment insurance, and that is due this month, as well. So make sure that you're filing your documents in a timely manner that you made your timely deposits. And you'll know if you are a three day monthly, quarterly or annual filer, I mean annual payer for the IRS because the IRS will let you know that. But make sure that your deposits are made and that you are filing your forms because there are two different fines you can get you can get a failure to file failure to pay. And yesterday was the tax deadline? Yes. So yesterday was a tax deadline, Friday, October 15. All returns had to be filed. I am exhausted. So that's why I'm shocked. And I am here this morning shot because we spent I mean, we've been just trying to get returns filed and making sure that our clients that filed extensions now have their returns filed. Our next upcoming deadline is nonprofits. Nonprofits, if you filed a timely extension are due on November 15. If you don't, you will get a failure to file penalty. I know our office has been working with clients that income change last year. Ironically, a lot of nonprofits had a boosted income. So they went from one a 990 Inform which is a postcard to an easy form. And they weren't aware income change. And when we filed the forms, they got the penalty. So we're working with clients to negate those penalties. But I can tell you, if you are a small business owner, you want to have relationships with any business that you do business with. You want to have the account, you want to have the relationship with attorneys, you want to have the relationship with your banker, you want to have the relationship with your insurance provider. You know you might be in the home buying process if you have a realtor, you can a relationship with that realtor, you know you loan officer, you want to relation you know you want to build a relationship and it doesn't have to be something where you're hanging out all the time, but you want to build relationships you know are you the type person that can win friends and influence people
Unknown Speaker 14:12
very important you know who are you can you build relationships
Unknown Speaker 14:16
you know, let's you know let's start there but a lot to be in a small business owner is not tell people it's not for the weak at heart so that to them by fire
Unknown Speaker 14:23
is not and if you are invited to any networking events take the opportunity to go the urban Chamber of Commerce does networking events, the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. First of all, you need to join one of the Chamber of Commerce number one,
Unknown Speaker 14:36
and there's so many right right you have the urban chamber commerce, the Latin Chamber of Commerce, the Asian Chamber of Commerce, the Henderson Chamber of Commerce in North Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. So your goal women's chamber,
Unknown Speaker 14:51
right your goal should if you are not part of one of the Chamber of Commerce here in Las Vegas, your goal should be to join one. You can go online do your research, as always optimisations to see which one you want to join. But you absolutely should join one and start your networking. You never know.
Unknown Speaker 15:07
You never know. And depending on what your business model is, they have roundtables. They always have different discussions, different events, where you can network and meet other people. I know when I first got here, I joined the chamber. And that's how I built my business through going to chamber events and then becoming a presenter at chamber events, still building the business also Toastmasters. So if you're not comfortable with talking, or you know, just short little speeches, join Toastmasters. Toastmasters is a way for you to learn how to speak. I mean, because you have to give these speeches you learned about the ohms our souls and souls and all that other stuff, but it won't. Toastmasters right? It helps you to really, really understand how to put a thought together, communicated effectively. And you know, just you learned a lot about you because I, one of my favorite favorite sayings is in business, your personal development is key. Because sometimes your how you grow personally, you can grow professionally and in your business. If you are not growing personally, your business can become stagnant
Unknown Speaker 16:21
because that's right. The urban Chamber of Commerce is having an IT roundtable on Wednesday, October the 20th, from 330 to five and is going to be on Zoom. Unknown Speaker 19:20
Wow. It does amaze you that organization does amazing work doesn't but I love nonprofits, nonprofits. Nonprofits tend to do everything. I mean, they're like an extension of social services. And when you see people out here, actually doing the work, doing the work helping people because you never know where your angel was going to be.
Unknown Speaker 19:42
That's right. Also this month is NAACP freedom fight. Awards Dinner was happening on October 23, at the Paris Hotel at 5pm. And the National Executive Director of the NAACP will be coming in to speak at the particular dinner. So for more information Then visit NAACP las vegas.org.org.
Unknown Speaker 20:04
That should be an awesome event as well. Okay, so we're getting back outside yay, getting back out, get back outside. No Oh, God, um, even though I love zoom, because I love the fact that I can go from meeting to meeting to meeting real quick, all I got to do is hit leave meeting and turn the meeting, leave meeting intermediate, you have multiple computers going on and stuff like that. And you can be in multiple places at one time. But I am so what ready to go back out and really, and really enjoy Las Vegas. So idle loans still open, still open? So open. Okay, how about PPP? What's going on? PPP is closed, but now we're doing still talking about forgiveness?
Unknown Speaker 20:40
Yes. So the PPP forgiveness applications are coming directly from your bank that you received your loan from? Are they coming directly from from the sba.gov, a lot of banks, went into partnership with the SBA and said, Okay, we're gonna let the SBA actually take the application, we're going to look over at everything looks good, you know, we're gonna move forward. So keep your eye out in your email box from a note from your bank, where you receive the money from, or from the SBA directly. The applications for people who received under $150,000 is very simple, simple, is it to it will take you five minutes to fill out, okay. But you have to remember, they're not asking for any receipts for anything that you use the money for. But you need to have those receipts, because they have up to seven years to come back and do an audit you to see what you actually spent the money on. Okay,
Unknown Speaker 21:27
so you had to do we in the first set, you had to send a receipts. Rhonda, please explain the type of documentation that you need to maintain for the money, or how you spent this money. So for
Unknown Speaker 21:38
the first PPP forgiveness, you had to turn in a ledger of how you paid yourself. With the check numbers and whatnot, you had to show the bank statements showing that you paid yourself. And if you use any of the money to run your business, all you have to do is show the invoices from the business. So if you paid your NV energy bill, or your AT and T cell phone bill, or you know or your CenturyLink bill, whatever bills you pay to keep your business open, you just show them invoices, you know that, hey, here's a monthly bill $53. And here's the zero balance because I paid it,
Unknown Speaker 22:09
got it. And you want to keep those documents where you want
Unknown Speaker 22:13
to keep those documents to places, if you still receive paper bills, you want to keep those in the file. Of course, if you don't receive paper bills, and you do everything online, you want to keep those on line in a folder on your computer. And then you also want to get an external hard drive. And you want to backup all the files on your computer to the external hard drive in case your computer crashes.
Unknown Speaker 22:34
Got it as you want to keep the documentation is like Rhonda said I'm say it again seven years, they have seven years to come back and ask you how you spent this money. So you want to keep the documentation you want to keep the documentation if you if you spent the money on payroll, of course you have your 940 ones and different things like that. And then they also gave you a period in which you had to spend those funds, but you want to keep a ledger of how you spent them because if they come back and ask you you're not going to remember what happened seven years ago, I couldn't tell you what happened seven years ago.
Unknown Speaker 23:04
And if you were fortunate to receive more than $150,000 You have to show that paperwork anyway had should
Unknown Speaker 23:08
have paperwork anyway. So God will behoove you to have it together. Just have it together. Just be well organized. And what you're doing peloton, okay, I can just tell you, Rhonda, I think I talked about it two months ago, still want it wonderful still on it still riding at least three to four times a week learning more about how to use it. As an entrepreneur, I really didn't understand the importance of work it out. And just how it clears your head, clears your head. And now it's not something where it's a fad, I'm working out because it's the fit. Now it's lifestyle. That's part of my lifestyle. Now to do something, whether it's meditation, jumping on a bike, doing some yoga, doing some strength, doing something to work, my body, my mind to stay clear, so that I can go out here and work with my clients and work through because you know, I'm mental Olympics. All day long. We're dealing with tax issues, mental Olympics, and just have to be clear and hear and listen.
Unknown Speaker 24:10
That's why small business owners, you have to take out a little time for yourself. I know sometimes we work 10 1214 hours a day, you know, to keep our businesses going. But you have to take a little bit of time, at least 20 to 30 minutes a day to work on yourself. Whether that's going for a walk riding a bike doing meditation, you need a little bit of me time before you jump back out there in the jungle, the stress is
Unknown Speaker 24:32
real, but no for real, but that's because stress is real. Because stress is real. Right? And as entrepreneurs, we you became an entrepreneur I know for me it was time manage time freedom. Right and at first it was like wow, handle time freedom because I'm always working. Still even on working for me, but I'm still working. When I organized my day a little differently. I became more productive and got more done in a shorter time span, just by learning different tools and techniques to get stuff done, setting a plan, you know, writing stuff out, having goals, and being in the process of achieving those goals, but then achieving so many other things, learning how to work on my business to, and not just in my business and doing it in this timeframe, and also separating and turning the business off. And just doing me.
Unknown Speaker 25:29
And ladies, we need that because this month is Heart Health Month is called release the pressure, the American Medical Association, the Ad Council Association, they have put together a program called the pledge to take care of yourself the pledge to exercise every day, and keep your heart healthy, good.
Unknown Speaker 25:49
And you got to keep your heart healthy, because we don't think about because it's like if you drop dead
Unknown Speaker 25:52
you I mean, right. You're no good to anybody, you know, good.
Unknown Speaker 25:56
I mean, people go more, but they don't keep on living. And I want to, you know, I want to keep on living a little bit. So I go to taking care of you high blood pressure, diabetes, whatever, whatever it is just taking care, you monitoring your pressure going to the doctors,
Unknown Speaker 26:12
we have to go to the doctor's at least once a year, at least once a year. And then if you have any other issues that you you're going through, you need to go to a doctor a little more than that, like I deal with high blood pressure. So I go to the doctor every three months, just to get a check just to find out where we are. So I can make sure I'm on point
Unknown Speaker 26:28
but it also helps you to monitor what you're doing daily. Yeah, because what I saw was when I started working out consistently with the peloton and everything else, my pressure is coming down. You know, and when I go to the dentist's office because it dentist's office checks my pressure every time I go. So a monitor, I'm looking at it, I'm like, Okay, so I'm riding this bike every day. And now my pressure is normal. I get off the bike for two weeks and the pressures up back up and air right and now no one alright, so guess what you need to change your lifestyle. That's been let's talk about diet. And, you know, just understanding because I think we have one of our girlfriends tell us that we don't live in a food desert. We live in a food swamp because there's food here. But is it what you should be eating
Unknown Speaker 27:17
right sometimes you have to make a change, you know, I am a state girl. However, I've been eating that for quite some time. So maybe it's time to take a little break and do a little vegan. You know, a plant based diet, a plant based diet a lot of people are changing to that and they're seeing like weight loss and all kinds of stuff happening to their body naturally naturally you know their pressures
Unknown Speaker 27:39
because of what they're putting in nip what they're putting in their body. And I know we had another girlfriend that she had she had remember she had the forest inside her house.
Unknown Speaker 27:52
The tree the tree right the tree growing vegetables to make a
Unknown Speaker 27:56
salad to make a salad in her house and the salad was oh my god the lettuce was better. The onions are like bursts of flavor in your mouth when you've been and I was like oh, this is different. Yeah, but it wasn't it wasn't expensive but it was a treat thing that she had in her house. Because we're in a desert and everything it was growing and it was absolutely amazing.
Unknown Speaker 28:18
So we just need to start taking better care of ourselves so that we can take better care of our families and our employees and our employees because we are a small business owners and we are we are all that we have. We all we
Unknown Speaker 28:30
got. We all we got we all we got. Well this is our show for this month. I am so looking forward November's come in happy turkey day Nevada day isn't it Nevada day so we celebrate this you know state of Nevada at the end of October and the holiday season is upon us. Yes Thanksgiving and Christmas. Oh my god entity year round is the end of 2021 We're almost there almost there almost there well until next month this is less talk with Leah and Rhonda My
